Overview

This article will show you how to install, or update Java, which is used to run many items within blackboard.

Installing/Updating

The steps below will walk you through getting the latest version of Java. However, if you'd prefer to check if the version you currently have is up-to-date you may do so through Java's site here: http://java.com/en/download/installed.jsp

Windows

  1. Go to www.java.com
  2. Click on the red 'Free Java Download' button
  3. Click on the red 'Agree and Start Free Download' buttonDouble-click on the file (or select 'Run') once it has finished downloading to start the installation process.
  4. Make sure to uncheck the bundled software that shows up before starting the installation (ask.com toolbar, mcafee scanner, etc). We are only wanting to install Java.
  5. After completing installation of Java restart your computer.

Apple

Check which version of OS X you have by:

  1. Click on the Apple logo in the upper left corner.
  2. Click on "About this Mac"
  3. The screen below shows where to find your OS X Version

  4. Follow the steps below for your version of OS X.

OS X 10.7.3 and up or OS X 10.8 and up

  1. Visit www.java.com
  2. Click on the red "Free Java Download" button
  3. Follow the on screen directions
  4. Reboot after Java has been installed

OS X 10.7.2 and below including 10.6  10.5 etc.

  1. Click on the Apple logo in the upper left corner.
  2. Choose Software Update from the list.
  3. If you have available updates, click on details to view them.
  4. Make sure the Java update is selected if it is there.
  5. Restart the system after the Software Update is finished.
