Targeting Audiences/Restricting Content


Explains how to modify selected portions of your IWU portal site to target a specific audience, while also restricting access to other audiences (such as employees, students, etc.).


After completing these steps, different sections of your portal site (web parts, libraries, etc.) should be visible only to the audiences you have designated.  Those audiences would include IWU groups such as:

  • Employees
  • Non-Residential Faculty
  • Non-Residential Students
  • Residential Faculty
  • Residential Students


Understanding the difference between Targeting Audiences and Granting/Restricting Permissions:

  • Targeting Audiences 
    • Used for Web Parts
    • Makes a specific web part visible to users in the audience(s) you target.
    • Important Tip: Targeting an audience does NOT restrict permissions to a specific library or list (such as uploaded documents, forms, etc).  It only prevents that content from being displayed in the web part for which you are setting a target audience.
      • If you have certain content (i.e. forms, documents, etc.) that is highly sensitive, you should "Restrict Permissions" to that content in addition to targeting an audience within a web part.
  • Granting/Restricting Permissions
    • Used for Libraries, Lists, and items stored within Libraries and Lists
    • Makes a specific library or list (or an item within a library or list) visible only by users in the audience(s) to whom you grant permissions.

Designate a Target Audience for a Web Part



  • On your portal site under the Site Actions menu, select Edit Page.
  • Determine the web part for which you would like to designate a target audience.
  • Click the dropdown arrow in the upper right corner of the web part and click Edit Web Part.
  • A menu will appear on the right side of the page which will look similar to this image:advanced dropdown.png

  • Expand the Advanced group. The Target Audiences section is at the end of this group.

  • Click on the book icon. book icon.png
  • In the new window that opens, you can conduct a search for the audiences you want to target.

    • Tip: All of the audience names that you will find useful should begin with "AUD", so do a search for "AUD".  The item selected in the dropdown box should be Global Audiences (which is the default).

  • Select the audiences that you would like to target and click the Add button at the bottom.

    • Tip: Groups that begin with "R", such as RSTUDENTS, are Residential groups.  Groups that begin with "NR" are Non-Residential groups.

  • Click OK.  Remember that "unselected" audiences will not be able to see this particular web part.

Grant/Restrict Permissions to a Library or List

  • To request permission changes to a library or list, submit a ticket to IWU Support by emailing
  • In your request, please specify the following:
    • Name of your portal site
    • The libraries, lists, or specific items within those libraries/lists for which you would like to change permissions.
    • Group(s) for whom you are granting or restricting permissions
      • Groups include:
        • Employees
        • Non-Residential Faculty
        • Non-Residential Students
        • Residential Faculty
        • Residential Students
        • Accepted Students
    • Permission type
      • Possible permission types are listed below:
        • Full Control - Can view, add, update, delete, approve, customize, and update permission levels)

        • Design - Can view, add, update, delete, approve, and customize.

        • Contribute - Can view, add, update, and delete list items and documents. 

        • Read - Can view pages and list items and download documents.

        • Approve - Can edit and approve pages, list items, and documents.

        • Manage Hierarchy - Can create sites and edit pages, list items, and documents.

        • Restricted Read - Can view pages and documents, but cannot view historical versions or user permissions.

        • View Only - Can view pages, list items, and documents. Document types with server-side file handlers can be viewed in the browser but not downloaded.

        • Contribute with out Delete - Contribute permissions, but cannot delete items.

  • Make sure that any web parts displaying those libraries/lists also have the appropriate audiences targeted.  Otherwise, those web part(s) will generate an error on the page.
