Restore Process: Recovery Steps for NetBackup 4.5 FP6 Clients

Preparation – Full OS Recovery

  1. Retrieve Windows Operating system software to reinstall on the NetBackup client that is being restored
  2. Retrieve Windows Volume License keys from offsite location
  3. Retrieve Application software media and licensing should a manual installation of application software be required, including the NetBackup 4.5 FP6 installation media
  4. Reinstall the same type and version of software that was previously used. For example, do not install Windows2003 standard edition retail edition if enterprise edition volume license media was originally on the server
  5. NetBackup 4.5 FP6 or later client software to install on the client that is being restored
  6. Special drivers or other software required to get the hardware operational (for example, a special driver for the disk drive array controller and network adapters)
  7. IP address and host name of the NetBackup client.
  8. IP address and host name of the NetBackup master server.
  9. Partitioning and formatting scheme that was used on the system that you are restoring. You must duplicate that scheme during Windows installation.

To Recover a Windows Client - Full or Partial Recovery

  1. Install a minimal Windows operating system (perform the Express install).  During the install, be certain to:
    1. Partition the disk as it was before the failure (if partitioning is necessary).
    2. Then, reformat each partition as it was before the failure.
    3. Install the operating system in the same partition that was used before the failure.
    4. Specify the default workgroup. Do not restore to the domain.
    5. Follow any hardware manufacturers instructions that apply, such as loading Dell drivers and Open Manage software
    6. Reboot the system when the install is complete.
  2. Configure the NetBackup client system to re-establish network connectivity to the NetBackup master server.   For example, if your network uses DNS, the configuration on the client must use the same IP address as before the failure and must specify the same name server (or another name server that recognizes both the NetBackup client and master server).
  3. On the client, configure DNS in the Network dialog box that you access from the Control Panel.
  4. Install NetBackup client software.
  5. Refer to the NetBackup Installation Guide for PC Clients for instructions. Ensure that you specify the correct names for the client and master server.
  6. To specify the client name, start the Backup Archive Restore software at the client and click Configure on the Actions menu.
  7. Enter the client name on the General tab of the NetBackup Configuration dialog. To specify the server name, click Specify NetBackup Machines on the Actions menu and make the entry on the Servers tab.
  8. Click the Clients/Policy Type tab, and select MS-Windows-NT for the Policy Type, and click OK
  9. Select the date from which to restore the backup image from the most recent full backup
  10. Select the file or folder to restore
  11. Then click Actions | Start Restore of Marked Files
  12. On the Restore Marked Files tab select Restore everything to its original location
  13. Click Start Restore
  14. Click Yes on the View Status window to monitor the restore
  15. Repeat steps 9-14 to restore the most recent differential backup image
