Software Updates (SCCM)

System Information:

  1. Clean up from previous month
  2. Research and test updates
    1. The person responsible for deciding which updates to apply should review the monthly bulletin summary and apply their normal risk analysis. This provides a list of security updates to be applied with the degree of urgency appropriate to each.
    2. Install updates on a virtual machine or test computer
  3. Search Folders
    1. Review new updates in the following Update Repository Search Folders
      1. All Office Updates This Month
      2. All Windows 7 Updates This Month
      3. All Windows XP Updates This Month
      4. All Other Product Updates
    2. Select required updates, right-click and choose “Update List”
    3. Choose “Select an update list” and click “Browse…”
    4. Click the appropriate update list and click OK
      1. Office List
      2. Windows 7 List
      3. Windows XP List
      4. Other Products List
    5. Make sure that “Download the files…” is NOT checked
    6. Accept the default security options by clicking “Next”
    7. Review the settings and click “Next” and then “Finish”
  4. Update Lists
    1. Review update list and remove any updates that are expired or superseded
    2. Accept license agreement if necessary
      1. Right click on the update
      2. Choose “Review/Accept License Terms”
      3. Read the license agreement and click “Accept” and OK
    3. Download the associated files
      1. Select all updates that have not yet been downloaded
      2. Right-click and choose “Download Software Updates”
      3. Choose “Select deployment package” and click “Browse…”
      4. Select the most recent software updates package and click “OK” and “Next”
      5. Choose “Download software updates from the Internet” and click “Next”
      6. Ensure that English is the only language selected and click “Next”
      7. Review the settings and click “Next” and then “Close”
    4. Important! Refresh the update list and confirm that all updates have been downloaded and license terms accepted.
  5. Pilot Deployment
    1. With the modified update list selected, drag the update list from the “Update Lists” node and drop it onto the corresponding Pilot Deployment node (under “Deployment Management”).
    2. A wizard will be started automatically to append the new updates (in the Update List) to the existing deployment.
    3. Important! As soon as the wizard completes, the new updates will be available for immediate installation by the clients in the associated collection.
    4. Review the status of the deployment using the SCCM report “Software Updates –B. Deployment Management” > “Management 2 – Updates in a Deployment”.
  6. Primary Deployment
    1. Repeat the steps above for the Pilot Deployment, selecting and dragging the same update list onto the corresponding Primary Deployment node.
    2. Review the status of the deployment at regular intervals.
