Hybrid Classroom Scenarios

Goal

This article provides awareness to the options available in IWU classrooms to allow inclusion of concurrent online learners. This list is organized by pedagogy.

The instructions below assume a basic familiarity with the classroom technology. Click here for more information on classroom technology.

Hybrid Classroom Scenarios

1.     Simple lecture

The essential communication mode of a lecture is Audio. The in-room and the online students must be able to hear the instructor's voice. The voice must be loud enough for intelligibility, but not too loud to distort the audio, which causes rapid listening fatigue. Close-micing the speaker provides the best possible audio for online learners. Recommended solution: AfterShokz Air headset.

Communication is increased and improved through support of the Audio, by additional visual reinforcements, such as eye contact with the listener, gestures, and body movement. These are native with in-room instruction, but require a video camera to allow them to be a part of online instruction, both concurrent and on-demand viewing.

Another reinforcement tool is the visual aid. A power point presentation, a photo, image or video clip, or text written on a whiteboard. Hybrid class instructors must consider how useful these visual aids are, to both in-room and online viewers. Images or videos from a computer could use Zoom's screen share feature to provide a close up view of the content to online and on-demand viewers. Pointing the video camera at the whiteboard may offer the online and on-demand viewers the same viewing privilege offered to in-room students. However, in rooms that have a document camera, or Interactive Flat Panel (IFP) consider this as a more hybrid-friendly alternative to writing on the whiteboard
