Sound Troubleshooting

Steps

Most sound issues can be resolved by unplugging the teaching station from the wall, waiting 10 seconds and re-applying power. Remember to turn on the computer in the cart afterwards if needed.

Teaching station computer

  1. Is the volume of the computer turned up? Check that it isn't muted.
  2. Is the volume of the media player turned up? (iTunes, YouTube, Media Player, etc).
  3. Is the volume knob on the teaching station turned up? There should be additional LEDs that light up, indicating an increase in volume. Or, if you are using a Touch Panel, a blue vertical bar next to the Volume UP and Volume DOWN buttons will indicate the volume level.  
  4. Has the correct source button been selected? Press the PC button on the control panel.
  5. If there is one, is the amplifier powered on, as indicated by an LED light on the front panel?
  6. Is the correct PC output option selected? Options typically include headphones, Bluetooth headset, HDMI, DisplayPort, or the name of the computer's sound card. To choose between these options, click on the speaker icon in the system tray (near the clock). Then, in the blue bar that appears click on the drop-down arrow on the right. Scroll through the available options, and test to identify the one that will send sound to the classroom speakers.

Laptop

  1. Is the audio cable plugged into the headphone jack of the laptop? and into the laptop audio jack on top of the teaching station?
  2. Has the correct source button been selected? Press the Laptop button on the control panel.
  3. Is the volume of the laptop turned up? Check that it isn't muted.
  4. Is the volume of the media player turned up (iTunes, YouTube, Media Player, etc).
  5. Is the volume knob on the teaching station turned up?  
  6. Is the amplifier powered on, as indicated by an LED light on the front panel?       
  7. If the equipment rack includes a Kramer video switcher, you may need to connect the HDMI laptop cable to the laptop and then power up, or reboot the laptop.

DVD

  1. Is the volume knob on the teaching station turned up?
  2. Has the correct source button been selected? Press the DVD button or the BluRay button on the control panel.
  3. Is the amplifier powered on, as indicated by an LED light on the front panel?    

AUX VIDEO

  1. Is the volume knob on the teaching station turned up?
  2. Has the correct source button been selected? Press the Aux Video button on the control panel.
  3. If using a video camcorder for playback, is the output volume on the camcorder turned up? Is the audio cable completely plugged in?
  4. In the camera's menu system, is the AV jack designated for output instead of input?
  5. Are the cables connected to the corresponding colored jacks (RED & WHITE) on top of the teaching station?
  6. Is the amplifier powered on, as indicated by an LED light on the front panel?

Document Camera (Visual Presenter)

Samsung Doc Cams do not support audio playback in IWU teaching station configurations.

However, in a few regional site classrooms, a Doc Cam can also be used as a web cam for video conferencing, in conjunction with a pair of wireless microphones (Revolabs, lipstick-styled table and wearable mics).

It is important to note that the Teaching Station's Controller should be set to PC for this to work properly, and pass audio to the speakers. In these specific classrooms, the Doc Cam and the microphones are connected to the PC by USB cables, so the PC button should be selected in order to view the video conferencing application screen on the classroom display.

Other Considerations

  1. HDMI source (DVD player, Blu-Ray, laptop, Apple TV)
  2. Are the cables connected securely to the jack on the wall plate, TV or projector?
  3. Are both the cable and the source device adhering to HDMI version 1.3 or higher?
  4. Are you using a dongle (converter, adapter) to connect a laptop's display output? Not all laptops can send audio out through the video jack. Not all adapters can pass audio with the video signal. Check the documentation of both your laptop and your video dongle.
