Apple SMC Reset

 

An SMC or System Management Controller Reset can fix various power related issues, such as a piece of hardware not functioning correctly.

Resetting the SMC on Mac portables with a battery you can remove

MacBook 2009 through 2017

Note:  Learn about removing the battery on MacBook and MacBook Pro.
  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Disconnect the MagSafe power adapter from the computer, if it's connected.
  3. Remove the battery.
  4. Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
  5. Release the power button.
  6. Reconnect the battery and MagSafe power adapter.
  7. Press the power button to turn on the computer.

Portables with a battery you should not remove on your own

Note:  Portable computers that have a battery you should not remove on your own include MacBook Pro (Early 2009) and later, all models of MacBook Air, and MacBook (Late 2009).
  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Plug in the MagSafe power adapter to a power source, connecting it to the Mac if its not already connected.
  3. On the built-in keyboard, press the (left side) Shift-Control-Option keys and the power button at the same time.
  4. Release all the keys and the power button at the same time.
  5. Press the power button to turn on the computer.  
Note:  The LED on the MagSafe power adapter may change states or temporarily turn off when you reset the SMC.

Mac Pro, Intel-based iMac, Intel-based Mac mini, or Intel-based Xserve

  1. Shut down the computer.
  2. Unplug the computer's power cord.
  3. Wait fifteen seconds.
  4. Attach the computer's power cord.
  5. Wait five seconds, then press the power button to turn on the computer.

MacBook 2018 and Newer

MacBook with T2 Chip

  1. Shut down the computer
  2. Press and hold the following keys:
    Control on the left side of keyboard, Option on the left side of keyboard, Shift on the right side of keyboard
  3. Keep holding all 3 keys for 7 seconds, then press & hold power button, Note: if MacBook is turning on, MacBook will turn off by itself
  4. Keep holding all 4 keys for 7 seconds, then release all keys
  5. Wait a few seconds then use power button to turn on MacBook

MacBook without T2 Chip

  1. Shut down the computer
  2. Press and hold the following keys:
    Control on the left side of keyboard, Option on the left side of keyboard, Shift on the right side of keyboard, Power on right side of keyboard
  3. Keep holding all 4 keys for 10 seconds
  4. Release all keys then use power to turn on computer
