How to Connect Dual Monitors

Overview

This page is useful for when the user wants to connect multiple monitors to their laptop.

This tutorial will show you how to connect multiple monitors to your computer.

Steps for Windows Users

To get started...

  1. Connect monitor to laptop.
  2. Turn on monitor.
    1. The laptop should detect the other monitor and display a repeat image of the laptop.
  3. Next right click on the desktop.
  4. Select Display settings.
  5. Under "Multiple displays" click on the drop down
  6. Select "Extend" to these displays.

Steps for Mac Users

To get started...

  1. Connect monitor to laptop.
  2. Turn on monitor.
    1. The laptop should detect the other monitor and it might duplicate the laptop image on the monitor.
  3. Open up "System Settings"
  4. Select "Displays"
  5. Select the image of the monitor
  6. In the menu option next to "Use as" select "Stop Mirroring", and then "Extended Display."
  7. Optional:  If you want to reposition the monitor in relation to the laptop, Click on the Arrange button,
    1. Drag the smaller monitor around to how you want your displays to be ordered
    2. For example if your laptop is down and to the left of the other monitor, move the smaller one in the "Arrangements" tab so that it is up and to the right of the larger one.

What's Next

You should now have an extended display on the external monitor, different than your laptop. If you are still not successful, try disconnecting the monitor from the laptop and reconnecting it, making sure the cable connection is secure, and that all the steps have been followed.
