Student Network Access - FAQ

A list of frequently-asked questions about student network access, including wireless access and the use of student-owned wireless routers.

Frequently Asked Questions – Student Access to Wireless Internet

Where can I connect wirelessly to the Internet?
  • Wireless Internet access is available in classrooms, campus buildings and in the lobbies of the Residence Halls.  In addition, wireless Internet access is available in the rooms of the following Residence Halls:
    • Hodson
    • Carmin
    • Evans
    • Martin
    • Reed
    • South Hall
    • All of The Lodges
    • South Townhouses
    • North Townhouses
    • Kem
    • Scripture
How do I connect to the IWU wireless network?
  • IWU has two wireless networks - IWU-WiFi and secured. IWU-WiFi is provided for student use, while secured is reserved for devices owned and operated by Indiana Wesleyan University.

What if my room has wireless Internet access, but I want to use my own wireless router?
  • Students may provide their own wireless router.  Indiana Wesleyan University reserves the right with or without notice to remove the equipment from the network, or disallow it from functioning on the network, if it is improperly configured or connected in any way that disrupts network access or security for others.  In addition, if it becomes a source of interference for other wireless devices, Indiana Wesleyan may require that the device be powered off or completely removed from the Residence Hall.
Does Indiana Wesleyan provide support for my wireless router?
  • Indiana Wesleyan University can help troubleshoot to determine whether a wall jack is working, and can provide limited support for getting your computer connected through your wireless router, but does not provide support for configuring student-owned wireless routers.
What are some tips for correctly configuring and connecting my wireless router?
  • Only the WAN or INTERNET port may be connected to the wall jack.
  • DO NOT connect any of the LAN or internal ports to the wall jack.
  • Wireless security must be enabled, and set to WPA or WPA2 (wireless security guidelines are subject to change as wireless best practices change.
  • The wireless SSID must be appropriate, and conform to IWU lifestyle expectations.  (The SSID is essentially the name you give to the router for connecting purposes.)
  • Indiana Wesleyan University reserves the right to audit the wireless router to determine that it is correctly configured and correctly connected.
What types of devices for providing wireless may I use in my dorm room?
  • Wireless routers (including wireless access points), switches and hubs are allowed.  In general most newer models of wireless routers should work, but IWU cannot guarantee that any given model or device will work on the IWU network.  Some examples of brands of wireless routers that could work depending on the model include but are not limited to the following: Apple Airport, Asus, Cisco, D-Link, Linksys, Netgear, TP-LINK, and TRENDnet.
  • DSL Routers and Cable Modems are NOT allowed.
What can I do if my device is not working, before calling for help?  Please follow these troubleshooting steps:
  1. Make sure device has power.
  2. Check that only the WAN or INTERNET connection is connected to the IWU network jack.  Any router connection labeled LAN or that has a number associated with the router will be a LAN port and SHOULD NOT be connected to the IWU network.
  3. Disconnect the wire at the router and plug in a laptop and try to access the IWU network.  If this connection with the laptop works, then the problem is with the student router.  It could be either the wrong port from their router connected to the IWU network, or there is a problem with the router itself.
  4. If the student does not have a laptop, ask another student with a laptop to perform login test.
  5. If there is more than one network port in the room/dorm area, connect the laptop to the other ports to see if they work.
What should I do after finishing troubleshooting steps, if my device is still not working?
  1. If connecting via a laptop to all of the network wall jacks in the room/dorm area does not work, then the problem may be with the IWU wall jack not being configured or connected to network.
  2. At this point, please contact the Support Center by calling ext. 2209 or by emailing support@indwes.edu to provide the following information:
  • Name
  • Dorm Name
  • Room Number
  • Network jack number they are connecting to in room, this should be labeled on the jack
  • The Resident Director Name
  • The IP address of the device that is connected to the wall jack. (Format: ###.###.###.###)  There will be four sets of numbers separated by dots.  How to find IP address
  • The media access control (MAC) number of the device they have connected to the port.  If possible, leave the device/laptop turned on and connected to the wall jack. MAC addresses will look like ##:##:##:##:##:## with characters ranging from 0 – 9 and a – f.  The MAC can have other characters besides semicolons separating each number.  How to find MAC address
